The final available work from the Shifting Skies series, emerging from the ongoing Water Cycle works.
Built through layered impasto oil, successive skies are painted over one another until the surface resolves, holding multiple atmospheric states within a single image.
Shifting Skies emerges from Wooller’s ongoing Water Cycle series, where the movement of water between states is used as a framework for thinking through transformation, continuity and the conditions under which personal change becomes perceptible.
Across the works, clouds operate as both subject and structure. They draw on a long art historical lineage, where in Renaissance painting clouds function as spatial thresholds, carrying bodies and attention between material and immaterial realms. Here, that logic is reconfigured within a contemporary, materially driven practice, where the sky becomes a site through which systems of perception, memory and atmosphere are held in relation.
The work is informed by an ongoing attention to how we register the world. The sky appears blue because shorter wavelengths scatter more efficiently through the atmosphere, reaching us from all directions. This constant field of colour, encountered in both sky and sea, sits at the edge of perception, shaping orientation before it is consciously processed.
Each painting is built through cycles of painting and removal. Thick impasto oil is laid down and reworked, with successive skies painted over earlier ones until the surface reaches a point of resolution. What appears as a singular image is constructed through accumulation. Earlier states remain active within the final surface.
The paintings operate as spatial records rather than depictions. They hold multiple atmospheric conditions at once, tracking shifts that occur across time, material and perception.
